Dread Axe FAQ

How do you get the Dread Axe?

Beat Peng Meng, the Axemaster, in Weeping Creek Valley. He is the fourth boss of the story, after Jagged Steel, and the axe is yours the moment he falls. At level 1 its card reads Damage 309 and Guard Break 208.

How do you break the iron chains in Phantom Blade Zero?

Get the Dread Axe. Its Iron Chain Breaker perk lets it break the iron chains that block paths from the moment you own it, so it does not need to be in one of your two Phantom Edge slots. The tutorial that follows puts it plainly: some Phantom Edges also help you explore.

Is the Dread Axe good against shields?

Yes. Its card gives it high Shield-Breaking power, and an in-game tip names it: heavy weapons like the Dread Axe are effective at breaking shields.

Is the Dread Axe the Man-Cutter from the demo?

Yes. The 2025 demo called it Man-Cutter: the same axe, charged on R2 and released out of a dodge or a run. The demo's double tap swung at full charge for 2 extra Remnant Sparks; the final Full-Power Charge costs 1 extra and unlocks at weapon level 5.

How do you Soul Temper the Dread Axe?

Open the Dread Axe on the upgrade screen and switch to Soul Tempering with the Soul Temper button. At level 16 it offers Rapid Charge, "Increases charge speed by 30%.", for 1 Blood Oath Dagger and 5,000 Remnant Dust.

What Dread Axe does

Owning it is also a key: its Iron Chain Breaker perk smashes the iron chains that block paths, even when the axe is not equipped. The story needs it: right after the fight, Against the Flow asks you to break a Chain Barrier with it.

The 2025 demo called it Man-Cutter. Its demo card let a double tap of R2 swing at full charge for 2 extra Remnant Sparks, a cost not seen again in the final game.

A massive, weighty axe capable of splitting mountains and cleaving through armor in a single blow. It has high Shield-Breaking power.
